On 8th and 9th June 2019, Scrappers Boxing Gym had the privilege of welcoming back England Boxing Talent Development Camp for another weekend of brilliant boxing.
Although this wasn’t the first time we’ve been able to host England Boxing TDC, it was a first all round.
The week being UK Coaching’s #GreatCoachingWeek, England Boxing coach Quinton Shillingford MBE, arranged to meet one of our volunteer boxing coaches, Chaz Dawson, who was diagnosed with a rare muscle disorder at a extremely young age.
Quinton Shillingford MBE described his experience:
“Step forward Chaz Dawson. I invited Chaz to meet England Boxing schools & juniors TDC boxers at today’s training camp as we were in his home town. I met Chaz on facebook 1 year ago and it was great to finally meet him in person.
Chaz is an inspiration in his own right. Chaz has a Rare Muscle Disorder called “Paroxysmol Non-Kinesogenic Choreoathetosis.”
Each one of these conditions is a muscle disorder in itself, he has all three which makes it extremely rare. Chaz is 1 of 5 in the world with this condition. It either makes him really weak or really strong, there is no pattern to it.
He also has a rare form of Dystonia which is like the cramp in the calf, it affects every muscle at the same time, including the heart. He had a Neurostymulator fitted into his chest and connected wires to probes drilled into the brain at age 9.
Considering his parents were told he wouldn’t walk or talk….I don’t think he has done too bad!!!!
Boxing/ Sport came into his life at age 14 and has given him hope. By doing this he hopes to inspire others along the way. What a true inspiration.”
